JAN AKKERMAN MAKES SUTTON RETURN
World-renowned guitarist Jan Akkerman brought his stunning band for an exclusive debut Surrey show at Sutton’s Boom Boom Club in June 2004. And now they are to return - on Sunday the 20th March 2005.
Best known for his million selling career with Dutch Prog Rock band Focus, in the early seventies, Jan became one of Rock’s leading guitarists, topping the NME Polls ahead of the likes of Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page.
While with Focus, Jan enjoyed two huge top ten hits, namely “Sylvia” and “Hocus Pocus”. Boosted by several appearances on the then influential TV show, The Old Grey Whistle Test, (recently re-issued on the programme’s DVD), the band enjoyed sell out tours all round the UK before become equally as big in the States. Chart albums quickly followed such as “Moving Waves”, “Focus II” and “Focus Live at The Rainbow”.
But unlike many of his contemporaries, Jan has always been an innovator and left the band at their height to pursue a solo career, that to date has generated twenty solo albums. Playing a mix of instrumental Rock and neo classical Jazz/Rock, Jan has always been ahead of the field in terms of new musical ideas. He consequently has appeared at a bewildering variety of guitar events from the major Rock events such as “Night of The Guitar” and the Hendrix “More Experience” show, to the North Sea Jazz Festival.
A bad car crash meant he stopped touring for several years, but five years ago he returned to the UK for the first in 15 years to play the prestigious Wirral Guitar festival, and followed that with a sell out tour.
Happily back on the boards, Jan returns to Britain with an album full of contemporary music that mixes Rock, Blues and Trip Hop beats. The new “CU” album has already received fine advance reviews and suggests that Jan remains one of the world’s premier virtuoso guitarists.
