THE ANIMALS at The Worcester Park Club

Fri 14th Apr 2000

This had to be one of the surprise gigs of the year, as one of the names of yesteryear suddenly sprang to life in all it's glory.

Not so much as just a name as five superbly talented individuals who not only thrillingly re invigorated a great back catalogue, but ultimately delivered a classic set in a true blues setting.

For the record the current Animals line-up comprises original members Hilton Valentine on guitar and vocals; John Steel on drums and 1965 member Dave Rowberry on piano, as well as the superb Jim Rodford (Kinks/Argent) on bass and Tony Liddle on vocals.

When the band underwent a major line-up change last year, things appeared a little uncertain. But the swift change in personnel has brought about a massive change for the better, with a tight rhythm section, including Jim Rodford's rock steady bass, John Steel's understated swing and Dave Rowberry rhythmic piano embellishments.

New vocalist Tony Liddle gave a magnificent performance, and I doubt even dear old Eric Burdon would reach this level of performance these days. Introduced as the "baby of the group" at a mere 40 years of age, Liddle made the stage his own, and the Animals duly delivered all the hits, brilliantly, in between some stirring Elmore James, Bo Diddley, Jimmy Reed and of course John Lee Hooker.

Rarely can a band of the 60's era have received such an ovation, as the crowd chanted football style.. It really was that good.
