So, in the face of today's bland and uninspired
pop acts, it is fortunate that a club scene still exists to support and
promote talent that would otherwise go unrecognised.
The Boom Boom Club in Sutton is one such example
- established a year ago by Pete Feenstra, it has hosted a variety of
talents in the form of both original artists and tribute bands. "I
believe you will always get support if you promote quality music,"
says Pete, 48, who has also worked as an in-house promoter for such venues
as the Shepherd's Bush Empire and Croydon's Fairfield Halls.
"We supposedly live in 'Cool Britannia' but
the music industry does not adequately support many up-and-coming artists
despite their importance in the music scene as a whole. If you don't promote
these people, the scene will just implode."
Pete was responsible for running the Worcester
Park Club less than three miles from the site of the Boom Boom, but a
change in the premises' management necessitated the move to Sutton, where
Sutton United Football Club were happy to accommodate them.
During its six-and-a-half years in Worcester Park,
the club enjoyed many successes. MOJO magazine featured it as "Club
Of The Month" in July 2001, and it even featured on the BBC's 'Newsnight'
programme in 2000 when it hosted the legendary 60s blues band, The Yardbirds.
It also played host to such legends as blues guitar
player Walter Trout and Leslie West (who took to the stage alongside the
late John Entwistle of The Who, recognised by many as rock's finest bass
player of all time). Members of Status Quo and Queen also featured.
"The club scene is crucial to the development
of live music," says Pete. "It gives new performers an opportunity
to experience playing live, which is what ultimately leads to bigger and
better things. My aim is to promote the best in enduring quality music
and up-and-coming bands in the field of blues, rock and R&B as well
as tribute bands."
The trend of success looks set to continue, with
former Chicken Shack guitarist Stan Webb having recently played at the
Boom Boom, and the scheduled return of Walter Trout (who has worked with
Pete for 15 years) on Monday October 20.
Also looming on the horizon are such acts as tribute
band Stairway to Zeppelin (See gig guide) and the renowned Hendrix-inspired
blues/rock outfit The Hamsters (September 7).
